Prince Harry in Afghanistan Fighting the Taliban

Prince Harry SoldierThe Drudge Report broke news that Prince Harry has been fighting on the front lines in Afghanistan against the Taliban.
They're calling him "Harry the Hero!"

British Royal Prince Harry has been fighting in Afghanistan since late December -- and has been directly involved in gun battle, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

The prince, a junior officer in the Blues and Royals, and third in line to the throne, has been a "magnificent soldier" and an "inspiration to all of Briton."

Prince Harry is talking part in a new offensive against the Taliban.

Ministry of Defense and Clarence House refuse all comment. Army chiefs have managed to keep the prince away from media and have encourage fellow soldiers in his squadron to stay quiet.
The BBC reports that the Ministry of Defense has confirmed the story. There was supposed to be a new blackout about Prince Harry's tour of duty in Afghanistan but the Drudge Report leaked the news. The Telegraph reports that Prince Harry has fired at the Taliban and has "helped Gurkha troops repel an insurgent attack on the southernmost British position in Helmand."

You can find more coverage of Prince Harry in Afghanistan on Times Online, CNN, The Guardian, Globe and Mail, USA Today and Sky News.

Florida BlackoutMassive power outages have hit the state of Florida. South Florida has been the area most affected by the outages. CNN reports that 4.4 million customers in South Florida have lost power.
About 4.4 million customers across South Florida were affected, Florida Power and Light officials said.

The outage struck shortly after 1 p.m., as scattered thunderstorms passed through the region. But the cause of the outage was not immediately known.

In Washington, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said there was no immediate concern that terrorism was behind the outage.

Stan Johnson, a spokesman for the North American Electric Reliability Council, said eight power plants were off-line across the region, but officials believe the outage has been contained.

Detective Robert Williams, a Miami-Dade County police spokesman, said power was out across the entire county.
Reuters says eight power plants have shut down. A baynews9.com story said outages are being reported in the entire state including Tallahassee. CNN is currently covering the blackout live. Local coverage of the blackouts can be found at CBS4.com, WSVN, NBC Channel 6, Local6, NBC-2, Orlando Sentinel, Sun-Sentinel and the Miami Herald.

Fidel Castro Resigns

Fidel CastroFidel Castro has resigned as Cuba's leader after 49 years of rule. The BBC reports that the resignation was posted at midnight in a letter published on the website of the Cuban Communist Party's newspaper Granma.
President George W Bush said the US was ready to help the "people of Cuba realise the blessings of liberty".

A senior US state department official, John Negroponte, added that the 1962 embargo would probably not be lifted "any time soon".

The European Union said it hoped to relaunch ties with Cuba that were almost completely frozen under Mr Castro, while China described Mr Castro as an old friend and said it would maintain co-operation with Cuba.

Mr Castro has ruled Cuba since leading a revolution in 1959.

The BBC's Michael Voss reports from Havana that most Cubans will be saddened by news of their leader's retirement, but many hope the political transition will bring economic improvements.
Castro, who is said to be very ill, turned control over the government over to his brother Raul in July, 2006 according to the BBC. Raul is 76 years old. The BBC also provides this list of other potential Cuba leaders. President Bush wants Cuba to make changes. He said, "this should be a period of democratic transition for the people of Cuba." CNN's Political Ticker rounds up what some of the presidential hopefuls had to say about Castro's resignations.

More coverage of Castro's historic resignation can be found at the New York Times, Guardian, IHT, CNN, National Post, Miami Herald, Fox News and WikiNews.

Kosovo Declares Independence

Kosovo has declared itself an independent country seperate from Serbia. They want to be known as the Republic of Kosovo. Serbia opposes this. The U.S., France and Britain have already recognized Kosovo's independence while Russia, China and other EU members are unhappy about the Serbia break away nation.
The U.S. and the European Union's biggest powers quickly recognized Kosovo as an independent nation Monday, widening a split with Russia, China and some EU members strongly opposed to letting the territory break away from Serbia.

The rift was on view for a second day at the U.N. Security Council, which was holding an emergency session to discuss the declaration of independence issued Sunday by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian majority.

Ethnic Serbs rallying in northern Kosovo angrily denounced the United States and urged Russia to help Serbia hold on to the territory that Serbs consider the birthplace of their civilization. Protesters also marched in Serbia's capital, and that nation recalled its ambassador to the U.S. to protest American recognition for an independent Kosovo.
President Bush has declared that the "The Kosovars are now independent." Israel has yet to recognize Kosovo. Many photos have shown Kosovo residents waving Albanian flags.

You can read more articles about Kosovo's indepedence on the New York Times, Moscow Times, Wikinews, This is London, Christian Science Monitor, Reuters, Associated Press, IHT, Time and Deutsche Welle.

Here's an embedded map showing Kosovo's location within Serbia.

Police Thwart Plot to Kill Mohammed Cartoonists

Several Danish newspapers have reprinted the Mohammed cartoons that caused an uproar in the Islamic world two years ago. The reprint comes after an attempt was made to murder one of the cartoonists. This attempt was stopped by Denmark police.
Denmark's leading newspapers reprinted a drawing of the Prophet Muhammad on Wednesday, a day after three men were arrested on suspicion of plotting to kill the cartoonist whose work had spurred deadly protests in the Muslim world.

The papers said they wanted to show their firm commitment to freedom of speech after Tuesday's arrests in western Denmark.

The Jyllands-Posten newspaper, which first published 12 depictions of Muhammad on Sept. 30, 2005, reprinted Kurt Westergaard's cartoon in its Wednesday edition. Several other major dailies also reprinted the drawing, which shows Muhammad wearing a turban shaped like a bomb with a lit fuse.
MSNBC says three suspected terrorists were arrested - two Tunisians and a Danish citizen of Moroccan origin. PET chief Jakob Scharf stated the arrests were to prevent a "terror-related assassination of one of the cartoonists behind the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad." The Telegraph's story says it was five people who were arrested. More coverage of this story can be found at the IHT, CNN, Newser, Gulf Daily News, UPI, MichelleMalkin.com and Wikinews. DHS, FBI Concerned About Female Suicide Bombers

Mom BombersFox News is reporting that the DHS and the FBI are warning law enforcement officials about female suicide bombers that appear to be pregnant. Fox News calls them mom bombers. The report (PDF) from the DHS warns of female bombers that may appear to be pregnant. These bombers may be wearing pregnancy prosthetics — devices that make them appear pregnant to hide explosive devices.

The document also contained the following information under the category: Implications.
Suicide bombings continue to be the preferred terrorist tactic because the bomber controls the location, timing, and method of delivery. Many facilities such as public places are inherently vulnerable to suicide bombing attacks and the terrorist's latitude in determining and adjusting the target and timing of an attack up to the point of detonation further complicates countermeasures. These factors indicate the importance of disciplined security measures and alertness by security professionals to potential threats from the full-range of gender and age groups.

Despite the lack of a reliable, predictable profile of a suicide terrorist, security and law enforcement officials and first responders should be aware of terrorists' use of female suicide operatives and familiarize themselves with behavioral patterns that such bombers have demonstrated in previous attacks.
There doesn't appear to be anything to suggest this is about to happen in the United States but the DHS wants first responders to be aware of the possibility of a female suicide bomber. The increasing use of female suicide bombers - such as the ghastly use of Down syndrome patients recently in a recent Iraq bombing - has them concerned.

Saudi Police Pursue Roses and Candy Hearts

Roses BannedOnce again religious police in Saudi Arabia are banning flowers and anything Valentine's Day related. They want to make sure no one gets any pretty roses or greeting cards. The BBC report on the story said Saudi florists sometimes have to sneak around and deliver roses after midnight.
Saudi authorities consider Valentine's Day, along with a host of other annual celebrations, as un-Islamic.

In addition to the prohibition on celebrating non-Islamic festivals, the authorities consider Valentine's Day as encouraging relations between men and women outside wedlock - punishable by law in the conservative kingdom.

The Saudi Gazette reported that some people placed orders with florists days or weeks before Valentine's Day in anticipation of the ban, which is a regular occurrence.

"Sometimes we deliver the bouquets in the middle of the night or early morning, to avoid suspicion," one florist said.
This USA Today article says many Saudis manage to celebrate the holiday despite the rose hating Saudi police. You can read more on this story at the BBC, Daily Telegraph, Shopping Blog and Reuters. A story in the Kipp Report says the candy heart police in Saud Arabia are at least leaving foreigners alone this year. The Kipp Report story includes a photograph of a veiled woman shopping for candy hearts.
