9 Killed at Church Shooting in Charleston, South Carolina

Nine people have been killed at a shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. It took place at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church around 9 p.m. The man walked into the church and started shooting people. He then escaped in a black sedan.

The New York Times quotes Charleston police chief Greg Mullen as saying, "This is a tragedy that no community should have to experience. It is senseless and unfathomable that someone would go into a church where people were having a prayer meeting and take their lives."

The shooter was able to escape after his horrific attack on the church. He is described as a young white male with sandy blond hair. Police say he escaped in a black sedan. The shooting is being investigated as a hate crime. The FBI is involved in the investigation. The Post and Courier reports that police have surveillance video footage of the suspect and his vehicle. Update: The suspect, Dylann Storm Roof, has been arrested in Selby, North Carolina. A Daily Mail article has several photographs of Dylann Roof. He is a 21-year-old white male. He is 5'9'' and weights 120 lbs.
