New Jersey Issues State of Emergency

Posted on August 25, 2011

New Jersey has issued a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Irene. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie issued the emergency declaration this morning.

Christie is also urging people to evacuate the shore, where coastal flooding is highly likely. The evacuations are mandatory, but could be upgraded. Christie says, "I am urging people to leave (the shore) by tomorrow (Friday), especially the barrier islands. The local shelters will be open soon. I will not order evacuations unless they are absolutely necessary. We are not overreacting. Do not attempt to ride this out if you're asked to evacuate."
